BENU is currently developing the first eco-village in the Greater Region in Esch/Azette. It is a socio-ecological project founded in 2017 which focusses on zero waste movement and is based on the principles of the circular economy.
BENU VILLAGE is a place that is constantly looking for new ways to use fewer and fewer new resources while reducing waste. The main idea and the primary objective behind the project is to limit the waste of resources and to permanently improve the ecological and social footprint, while ensuring sustainable and local production. BENU VILLAGE thus stands for high-quality creative products and services, such as participation, integration and collaboration.
Eco-friendly, but also socio-responsible…
Social responsibility is made possible through local partnerships, cohesion, integration, inclusion, equality and participation. BENU VILLAGE thus works with various local structures. Among others with the association Interactions in the districts of Esch. Inclusion in all BENU activities is a matter of course for us. In addition, the eco-village integrates unemployed people as well as qualified migrants. Young people are trained, for example, in carpentry, sewing and soon also in cooking.

The International Aid of the Luxembourg Red Cross implements many humanitarian and development projects in particularly complicated contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular in the least developed countries. The countries of sub-Saharan Africa are bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change such as rainfall deficits, episodes of severe drought, but also torrential rains and devastating floods with dramatic consequences on the means of subsistence of populations. In this context, our objective is to help the most vulnerable populations to develop adaptation, mitigation and resilience capacities against the consequences of climate change. At the same time, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. The solutions presented, thanks to a photo exhibition, concern Green Habitat in Africa, Water and Sanitation, the Fight against Deforestation and Risk Reduction and Disaster Preparedness. In particular, the replication of a full-size “Sahel Shelter”, which hosts the photo exhibition, will make it possible to visualize an environmentally friendly response (local materials, circular economy, upcycling, etc.) to the housing needs of emergency in the Sahel, impacted by climate change.
Climate change is a fact but it is not a fatality in the face of which there would be no solutions. The widespread belief that the individual cannot change this – on his own scale – is wrong. Let’s share ideas of small gestures that everyone can gradually transform into ecological habits in their daily lives. Big actions are important, but here we focus on small actions that engage everyone.
